What is the meaning of a "flat lay" (in wedding terms)?

Let's talk flat lay shots! When you dive into the world of wedding photography, you’ll come across a variety of terms and techniques that can transform your wedding album from ordinary to extraordinary. One such term is "flat lay." But what exactly does it mean, and why should couples consider including flat lay details in their photo lists?

Most photographers will work with you to decide what items to include but as a general rule of thumb it'll be the invitation suite, rings, shoes, loose flowers, and all other accessories - shoes, necklaces, cuff links, even perfume. And a quick tip: a shoebox is the perfect way to store these items!

What is a flat lay?

Just like it sounds, flat lay photography is when items are arranged on a flat surface and photographed from above. Almost like shooting product photography, the flat lay technique helps capture more textures, colors, and intricacies of the smallest details that most angles may miss. In the context of wedding photography, flat lays typically include a curated collection of wedding day details such as invitations, rings, jewelry, flowers, and other significant accessories. Wearing a special scent that day? Memorialize the smell with including your fragrance bottle! Want to highlight some lipstick? Stick it in the flat lay. Want to define your color palette, florals, and textures that set the mood? Have your flat lay photos start your album.

Why should I include flat lay photography in my wedding album?

Capture every detail

Weddings are full of small, meaningful details that tell the story of your day. From the lace on your wedding dress to the calligraphy on your invitations, these elements are often meticulously chosen and hold sentimental value. Flat lay photography ensures that these details are captured beautifully and cohesively, from the intricacies of wedding hairpins and embroidered veils to necktie details and wedding shoes.

Creating a Visual Story:

Flat lays offer a unique way to set the tone of the story of your wedding day. By arranging these precious items set aside for an event as special as your wedding, you are arranging a summary of your planning and preparation. These photos help complement your traditional family, wedding party and newlywed photos to make your wedding album even more comprehensive and engaging.

Highlighting Your Style:

Every couple has a distinct style and personality, which is often reflected in their choice of wedding details. Flat lay photos can showcase your aesthetic, whether it’s classic elegance, rustic charm, modern minimalism, or something entirely unique. These photos serve as a reflection of your personal taste and the overall theme of your wedding.

Preserving Memories:

Wedding days go by in a blur, and it’s easy to miss or forget some of the smaller details. Flat lay photography preserves these memories, allowing you to look back on the thought and effort you put into every part of your special day.

Do I NEED to include a flat lay photo?

No, a flat lay is by no means required! Some couples skip the flat lay and getting ready photos altogether while for others it's a must. If you've been planning these small details for a while or may have some heirloom items that are sentimental, this is a great opportunity to showcase your values or family history.

What should I include in my flat lay?

First thing is first: get a box to collect everything in one spot! This doesn't have to be fancy - any shoebox will do! What's more important is that all the items are gathered together when your photographer arrives on your wedding day. Here are some of our favorite flat lay components:

  • Paper goods (invitations, save-the-dates)

  • Wedding dress trim/leftover fabric

  • Jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.)

  • Bridal accessories (hairpins, veil or dress details, gloves, etc.)

  • Personal accessories (cufflinks, watches, socks, etc.)

  • Natural elements (flowers, greenery)

  • Wedding shoes

  • The rings! (box optional)

Incorporating flat lay details into your wedding photo list can add depth, variety, and a personal touch to your wedding album. These photos not only capture the beauty of your carefully chosen details but also weave them into the broader story of your wedding day. Whether you’re a fan of artistic photography or simply want to ensure every element of your celebration is remembered, flat lay photography is a trend worth considering. So, when you meet with your wedding photographer, don’t forget to discuss the possibility of including some gorgeous flat lay shots in your big day’s photo plan!
